Our Methodology

How We Build & Verify Exercise Data

Exercise Selection & Classification

Every exercise in the GrabGains database goes through a structured curation process. Each movement is classified by target muscle group, equipment requirements, difficulty level, and movement pattern — with detailed instructions, muscle activation data, and supporting academic literature.

Muscle Activation Data

Primary and secondary muscle groups for each exercise are determined based on established anatomical and biomechanical principles, supported by peer-reviewed literature where available. We cross-reference multiple sources to ensure accuracy — no single study dictates our classifications. When data is unavailable for a specific variation, we extrapolate from closely related movements with documented activation patterns.

Academic Sources & Citations

Each exercise page includes 2–3 peer-reviewed academic references sourced from PubMed, the U.S. National Library of Medicine's database of biomedical literature. We prioritize:

  • Studies published in indexed, peer-reviewed journals
  • Research directly relevant to the exercise or its movement pattern
  • Recent publications (last 10 years) where available, supplemented by foundational studies
  • Papers with strong methodology — randomized controlled trials and systematic reviews when possible

All citations link directly to their PubMed entries so users can verify the original research. Exercise descriptions also include inline citation links to the specific studies that support key claims.

Exercise Descriptions

Descriptions are written to be accurate and accessible. We avoid unnecessary jargon and explain biomechanical concepts in plain language. Each description covers the purpose of the exercise, the muscles it targets, and practical considerations for execution — all grounded in the cited literature.

Review Process

Our exercise data is being progressively reviewed by certified personal trainers with hands-on coaching experience. As part of this ongoing process, each exercise is verified for accuracy in muscle group classification, movement cues, and safety considerations. Content is also periodically updated as new research becomes available. If you spot an error or have a suggestion, contact us — we take data accuracy seriously.

Data Transparency

We believe fitness information should be verifiable. That's why every claim on our exercise pages links to its source. No vague appeals to "studies" — we show you exactly which paper supports each statement, so you can read it yourself.
