Key difference
The seated leg curl uses the same knee-flexion movement with the hips flexed, which places the hamstrings that cross the hip in a lengthened position. In a 12-week trial in which each participant trained one leg seated and the other lying, the seated version increased whole-hamstring volume by 14% compared with 9% [1].
When to choose it
Choose this as the first replacement whenever a seated machine is available, particularly when hamstring size is the goal. The thigh pad also prevents the hips from rising, a common compensation on the lying machine.
